Music therapy depends upon the correct intonation and right use of these basic elements. The tradition of Indian music starts from the physiology of sound. It defines sound which has sustained quality with a single frequency or combination of related frequencies, melodious to the ears as Nada. The book further discusses Shåuti (the relative musical pitch), Svara (the musical sound of a single note), Rāga (the melodic mode), and Täøa (the rhythmic pattern).
A raga is a group of notes having specific frequencies awakening a particular feeling. In other words, each Indian Raga or melody can produce a particular aesthetic mood or rasa. Revealing of a particular rasa or mood from a Raga depends upon the musical composition, piece of the melody, the performer, tempo or Laya, rhythm or Tala, time of rendering etc. With the background of Shruti, the emotional effect of a Raga is clearly perceived. With the willful submission to the selected Indian Ragas, the mind becomes standstill or fixed in a particular aesthetic feeling or mood such as love, compassion, courage, and calmness in the listener. This experience becomes Rasa, which marks an important landmark for emotional healing through Indian music which is also the base for Indian music therapy.
The book precisely uncovers the metaphysical causes of illness, the Ragas or Indian melodies with a specific combination of Svaras or notes, depicting delightful ‘Rasa’ which enables the mind’s capacity to influence bodily function and symptom.
It also sheds light on integrating three systems of mind-body medicine namely Ayurveda, Svaraveda ( knowledge of Svaras), and Yoga Vijnana (lifestyle prescriptions through Yogic knowledge).
